How To Dye A Tula Blanket?
Ice dyeing
- Step #1. First, you need to wash your tula blanket. Mix 1/8 teaspoon of textile detergent or dish soap with hot water. Use it to wash the blanket.
Prepare a mixture of soda ash and hot water.
Use 1 cup to 1-gallon proportion making sure the soda ash completely dissolved through mixing thoroughly.
Make a volume enough to soak your blanket in for at least one hour.
- Step #2. After soaking, take your blanket out and squeeze all excess water. You may consider using a dryer to make it easier.
Prepare for dyeing by setting up a grate over a basin to catch dripping dye. Scrunch your blanket and put it on the grate.
Using anything you prefer to use—small spoon, strainer, etc.—sprinkle dye onto your blanket.
Apply each colour one at a time and create patterns you want.
You can use the colour wheel as a guide to see which colour compliments each other. Knowledge of which colour compliments each other will make your design look creatively harmonious.
- Step #3. Afterwards, you can now add a thin layer of ice.
As the ice melts, see if the colours have penetrated the blanket fully. Add more dye and ice if not.
Once the blanket wholly penetrated with colours— which we’re sure looks so good already, cover it with a plastic bag.
Please put it in a warm room for 24 to 48 hours to allow the blanket to absorb the dye further.
- Step #4. After batching, you can now rinse your blanket. Use cold water to remove all soda ash for 5 minutes.
Then, change the water to warm for another 10 to 20 minutes of rinsing.
When the water becomes clear, soak your blanket in hot water.
If the colours start to fade, don’t panic! It is normal.
You can change the water every few hours and do no less than five soaks.
- Step #5. Youing, you can wash your blanket once again with hot water and 1/8 teaspoon of textile detergent or d when you with soaking soap.
Rinse and let the blanket get air-dried.
You have now upgraded a simple tula blanket into a bright and colourful one!

If you are aiming for a lighter shade, stir for at least 30 minutes. If a brighter colour is what you want, work harder for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
- Step #5. Slowly pour in 1/3 cup of soda ash into the bucket during the last 15 minutes of stirring.
