Commonly, people needed to shorten their curtains because they accidentally purchase a curtain with the wrong length.
It can also because of a piece of furniture sitting right below the window frame.
Either way, you can shorten it by using any of the following methods:
- Sewing
- Iron-on fusible tape
- Fabric glue

You won’t know if it will work if you won’t try.
What Are The Things You Need?

- Yardstick or ruler
- Fabric Scissors
- Iron
- Ironing board
- Straight pins
Steps To Shorten Curtains Without Sewing
After you have gathered all the things needed, you can proceed to the actual steps in shortening your curtain.
How to shorten curtains without sewing?
Step #1. Deciding on the length
First and foremost, you need to decide on your desired length to know how much to cut off or hem.
If the excess fabric in your curtain is a lot, you can trim its ends using your fabric scissors.
Use some straight pins to mark your curtains.
You can do this step while your curtains are hanging on a curtain rod.
But you might as well take it off the curtain rod.
Make use of a ruler in measuring how long you are going to hem.
In any case, slide the curtain out of the rod after you finished marking your desired length.
Step #2. Folding your curtains
Now you have to fold the curtain onto the length that you have marked earlier.
After folding the excess material upwards at the back of the curtain, you need to pin it again using straight pins.
That is to keep them in place.
Step #3. Ironing the hem
To create a neat crease, lay the curtain on top of the ironing board or flat surface and start ironing the hem.
Step #4. Completing the process
The remaining steps vary depending on the particular hemming methods that you will use.
Earlier, we have discussed that this one can do using three different ways.
But we will only focus on the non-sewing options.
Method #1. Using fabric glue
If you opt to use this method in hemming your curtains, you can finish the process by simply applying the fabric glue onto the fabric’s edges.
Make sure to put the glue on the uppermost portion of the hem.
Method #2. Iron-on fusible tape
In this method, you need to position the tape beneath the edges of the hem.
Then iron the fabric so that they will bond securely.
Ensure to follow the directions indicated in the packaging.
Remember that you must not move the iron, but hold the iron in place for a few seconds, lift it and move to another spot.
What Is The Right Hem Size?
Typically, the hem for a curtain with a standard length is about three or four inches.
The hem would be around two inches on shorter curtains, while on longer ones, it can be about five inches.
When you are about to shorten your curtain, always remember to leave enough fabric for the hem.
